Left Hand, Right Hand – A Dual Exhibition at The Gallery at Windsor

Le Brun and Verity’s decades-long artistic relationship highlights their contrasting styles. Le Brun’s imaginative, abstract works complement Verity’s delicate, observational depictions of nature, showcasing their unique yet interconnected artistic practices.

The Gallery at Windsor is set to host Left Hand, Right Hand, a remarkable exhibition showcasing the works of two celebrated British painters, Sir Christopher Le Brun and Charlotte Verity. Running from January 27 to April 25, 2025, this exhibition marks the first time the two artists will exhibit together in the United States. Curated by Robin Vousden, the show promises to offer a unique exploration of their distinct yet interconnected artistic practices.

A Shared Journey, Divergent Visions

Le Brun and Verity’s artistic relationship spans decades, beginning with their meeting at the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 1974 and their marriage in 1979. Despite their shared experiences, their artistic approaches diverge significantly. Le Brun’s work is driven by imagination, characterized by a mastery of color, texture, and the physicality of painting. His pieces, such as Small Seasons, Summer (2023) and Phases of the Moon IV (2024), evoke the passage of time and the changing seasons, often balancing abstraction and figuration.

In contrast, Verity’s practice is rooted in close observation and a deep sensitivity to the natural world. Her paintings, such as Glance (2021) and Anemones (2021), capture the fleeting beauty of plants and flowers with precision and delicacy. Her watercolour monotypes further reflect her lyrical yet restrained approach, emphasizing the fragility and transience of her subjects.

A Celebration of Artistic Dialogue

The exhibition will feature some of the largest-scale works by both artists, offering a rare opportunity to view their careers side by side. While their styles differ, both Le Brun and Verity share a profound connection to the natural world and a commitment to innovation and renewal in their art.

Hilary M. Weston, co-founder of Windsor and Creative Director of The Gallery at Windsor, expressed her enthusiasm for the exhibition: “We look forward to seeing Charlotte and Christopher’s work on display together at Windsor. Curated by the artists’ friend Robin Vousden, this unique show promises to be full of personal observation, profound connection, and aesthetic ingenuity.”

Accompanying Catalogue

To complement the exhibition, a fully illustrated catalogue will be published, featuring a new essay by Robin Vousden. Additionally, the book will reissue essays by Edmund de Waal, originally published in 2014 and 2016, offering further insight into the artists’ practices.
