Rice’s journey into the world of art and storytelling began in a home filled with creativity. From an early age, Rice demonstrated a natural affinity for art, even writing and illustrating her first book, The Billy Goat in The Rose Garden, in the second grade. This early passion laid the foundation for a career that would later see her author and illustrate 24 children’s books since 2015.

to create self-published, professional-looking books.” – Pamela C. Rice
One of Rice’s standout creations, The Painting Speaks, exemplifies her collaborative spirit and dedication to storytelling. The book, which tells the story of a young girl discovering her love for art, features contributions from internationally celebrated artists like Synthia St. James, Evita Tezeno, and Clyde D. Lewis. Each artist brought their unique style to the project, enriching the narrative with their visual interpretations. “I asked the artists to describe their pieces briefly, which became the history lesson ‘Leslie’ learned at the gallery,” Rice explains. This collaborative process not only added depth to the story but also highlighted the power of art as a medium for education and inspiration.
“The visuals and text grow together,
with the story often told first through images.” – Pamela C. Rice
Another notable work, When The Brown Bird Flies, delves into the early childhood experiences of Tuskegee Airman pilot Jack Lyle. Drawing from her personal connection with Lyle, Rice crafted a narrative that is both educational and engaging, making history accessible to young readers. “I told this story in a way kids would understand, using experiences they may have at the age of the character,” she says. By weaving real-life stories into her books, Rice ensures that her narratives resonate with authenticity and relatability.
Rice’s illustrative style, which has evolved over the years, is a testament to her commitment to growth and exploration as an artist. She believes that an artist’s style develops through studying others, experimenting with different mediums, and pushing creative boundaries. For Rice, the visuals and text of a book grow together, with the story often taking shape first through images. “The graphics and illustrations shape the book’s look and overall presentation,” she notes, emphasizing the importance of visuals in capturing the attention of young readers.
Beyond her work as an author and illustrator, Rice has also shared her knowledge and experience through teaching and lecturing at various institutions. Her advice to aspiring children’s book authors and illustrators is both practical and inspiring: “Make the story clear with an inspiring message; be concise and don’t underestimate any child’s capabilities to understand. Limit text per page for certain age groups, ensure a good story arc, and budget for a good illustrator. Do not be discouraged by not immediately being accepted by a publisher; self-publishing will give satisfaction and motivation of seeing your story in print.”
Pamela C. Rice’s dedication to her craft and her passion for inspiring the next generation of artists and storytellers have solidified her place as a luminary in children’s literature. Her ability to blend artistic expression with meaningful narratives continues to leave an indelible mark on readers and the literary world alike. Through her work, Rice not only tells stories but also fosters a love for art, history, and imagination in children, ensuring that her legacy will endure for generations to come.
