What inspired you to create the “Faces” series, and how do you see it reflecting the influence of social media on art?

I did not want to be a creep and follow people without posting something, so I figured out how to create something, especially for social media—light and funny.

“Humor is an intelligent way to navigate the rough seas of daily life.” –Olaf Breuning

Can you share the story behind your “Bunnies” project and its playful transformation of iconic statues?

Easter Island and Easter Bunnies: I thought that was enough reason to make Bunnies out of the Moais. Sometimes, simple ideas are the best.

How do you approach blending humor and deeper commentary in your art?

Humor is an intelligent way to navigate the rough seas of daily life. It allows one to step back and look at heavy things more lightly. Humans are the best if they are relaxed; humor can help.

What was your creative process for the “Rain” exhibition, and what message were you hoping to convey?

“Rain” at Metro Pictures Gallery in New York was during deep Covid. I never hope to convey a message. My reason for this show has been to create ideas about human influence on our environment.

How has your Swiss background and current life in Upstate New York influenced your artistic style and themes?

A lot of Swiss artists have humor in their art. That might be my Swiss heritage. Upstate gave me access to nature. A lot of my previous works are thought about human/nature. But humor will always be a part of my language.

Your work often spans multiple mediums, from photography to sculpture to film. How do you decide which medium best suits a particular idea?

Life is a colorful affair; I try to tell my stories with different mediums to reflect that fact.

In your bio, you mention planning to make art until you die. What drives your passion and commitment to creating art?

I need my art to understand the world around me better. Art is my way of expressing my thoughts about life. And that will go on until the end. I can’t stop it.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

Producing art is a personal dedication, like writing a diary the end of each day. I am not a big fan of collaborations. I make art to reflect on myself in this life.

Leaves

Olaf Breuning’s vibrant artwork featuring stylized, textured leaves against a rich red background masterfully captures nature’s beauty through a bold, contemporary lens. The dynamic arrangement and intricate detailing of the leaves evoke a sense of movement and vibrancy, creating a joyful and energetic composition. Breuning’s use of contrasting colors, like the deep red background with cooler leaf hues, is visually striking and emotionally engaging. This exceptional piece highlights Breuning’s innate ability to blend organic motifs with modern artistry, providing viewers with a captivating and imaginative artistic experience.
