Sema Özevin, an acclaimed artist, blends photography and video art, exploring memory and storytelling through innovative techniques, while navigating the challenges of the digital art landscape.
Sema Özevin has made a significant mark in the realms of photography and video art since 1996, producing works that resonate on international platforms. Her projects, including the Choronotope series, Womans Aura, Kinesthetic, Cosmos, Cocoon, Paradoxical Loop, Space, Parallel Universe, and Ouroboros Loop, showcase a diverse range of styles—fictional, experimental, figurative, and abstract. Özevin’s ability to intertwine abstract time with concrete space is a hallmark of her artistry, often employing experimental techniques that involve image manipulation, deconstruction, and form distortion.
“I describe the subject with a special technical and aesthetic photographic language that I have created with my perspective on life and art.”
In addition to her artistic endeavors, Özevin has contributed to industrial documentaries, starting with her project on the Pişmaniye dessert, which highlights local labor through the stories of various industries. Her work in corporate communication and sustainable brand communication complements her teaching role at several universities, where she imparts her knowledge in the field of art. Her portfolio can be explored further at semozevin.com.
“Any image that doesn’t have a story in it catches my attention.”
Beyond photography, Özevin is actively engaged in video art, documentary short films, and feature films, serving as both director and cinematographer. Her notable works include the short films “Babam’a,” “Davut Dedem,” and “Pişmaniye,” as well as her cinematography in the feature film “Shelter.” She also produces video clips for Amselcom Music Production in Berlin, with her video works available on her YouTube channel, Sema Özevin Art TV.
Özevin’s academic background is impressive; she graduated at the top of her class from Kocaeli University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, specializing in Photography, and later completed her master’s degree at Gazi University, focusing on video art’s paradoxes and cycles. Currently, she is pursuing her doctorate in Radio, Television, and Cinema.
Her artistic journey has garnered her over 350 awards in various national and international competitions, including prestigious titles from the International Photographic Art Federation in France. These accolades have significantly enhanced her recognition on global platforms.
Özevin’s innovative approach to light painting—a technique involving long exposure with a flashlight—has redefined experimental photography. This unique style gained attention when it was featured in major Turkish news outlets during her solo exhibition.
When discussing her visual language, Özevin emphasizes the importance of memory in storytelling. She believes that photography transcends mere representation, serving as a medium for conveying complex narratives. Her projects often stem from personal experiences, societal issues, and artistic inspirations, leading to a meticulous planning process that includes research, storyboarding, and technical considerations.
Influenced by renowned photographers like Annie Leibovitz, Steve McCurry, and Cindy Sherman, Özevin draws from a rich tapestry of artistic styles. However, she faces challenges in the digital age, particularly regarding the reproducibility of her work and the complexities of marketing art. Despite these hurdles, she remains committed to maintaining the integrity of her editions and ensuring that her works are presented with care.
Özevin’s storytelling approach is deeply embedded in her projects, where each image is part of a larger narrative. She prefers to create series that interconnect, allowing viewers to engage with the work on a personal level. Her technical preferences include professional camera bodies and a variety of lenses, alongside a commitment to using advanced editing tools like Photoshop and Lightroom to refine her images.
As she continues to explore new projects in photography, video, and installation art, Özevin remains dedicated to her journey of learning and growth. Through her work with Portfolio Art Space, she fosters sustainable art communication and provides guidance to emerging artists.
Sema Özevin’s contributions to the art world are commendable, showcasing her as a multifaceted artist who seamlessly blends technical skill with profound storytelling. Her ability to navigate the complexities of contemporary art while remaining true to her vision is a testament to her talent and dedication. As she continues to evolve, her work promises to inspire and challenge audiences, making her a significant figure in the landscape of modern photography and video art.
